What it means in practice

An approved medical taxi is a taxi authorised by French health insurance.

Being approved (« conventionné ») is not a marketing label: it is an agreement signed with the local health insurance fund (CPAM). It authorises the company to carry patients on prescribed journeys and to apply the agreed rates.

  • Prescription checked with you before departure
  • Help getting in and out of the vehicle
  • Clean, air-conditioned, non-smoking vehicles
  • Return journey arranged in a single booking
Reasons for transport

Which treatments do we cover?

Every type of care comes with its own constraints: fixed appointment times, tiredness after treatment, unpredictable waiting times. Our organisation adapts to them.

Long-distance medical transport from Nantes.

Some treatments are only available in Angers, Rennes, Paris or Bordeaux. Making that journey by train with reduced mobility or severe fatigue is often an ordeal. We pick you up from home, drop you off at the facility, and bring you back.

  • One way or return in the same day
  • Breaks that suit how you feel, not a timetable
  • Prior approval over 150 km: we guide you through it
Please note

This service covers medical transport with a prescription. For private or business long-distance travel, see our train stations, airport & long distance page.

On the day

How a journey works.

01

The driver arrives early

We set off with time to spare and call you as we approach. A missed medical appointment cannot be made up: that principle shapes our whole organisation.

02

Help getting settled

Help getting in and settling comfortably. The temperature is set to suit you.

03

Dropped off as close as possible to the department

On a hospital campus, a good or a bad drop-off point can mean hundreds of metres of walking. We walk with you to the department's reception.

04

Return journey and billing

Return straight away or at the agreed time. You hand the prescription to the driver: you do not pay the share covered by French health insurance.

What to bring on the day

Your medical transport prescription, an up-to-date Carte Vitale (French health insurance card), and if needed your appointment letter or card.

What we do not provide

No stretcher transport, no emergency medical transport and no medical supervision during the journey. These situations call for an ambulance. Life-threatening emergency: call 15 or 112.

7 days a weekService all year round, including weekends and public holidays, by reservation.
100%Coverage possible for long-term illness (ALD), hospital stays, workplace accidents or maternity.
150 kmDistance beyond which prior approval from your health insurance fund is required. We guide you through it.

Your questions

What patients ask us most often.

What is the difference between an approved medical taxi, a VSL and an ambulance?

These three options match different states of health. The approved medical taxi and the VSL (light medical vehicle) carry patients in a seated position. The ambulance is reserved for patients who must travel lying down or who need medical supervision during the journey.

Your doctor decides, on the prescription, which option suits your condition. Ma Centrale 44 provides seated transport only.

Do I need a medical prescription?

Yes, if you want French health insurance (Assurance Maladie) to cover the cost. The prescription (often called a « bon de transport ») must be issued before the journey by your GP, a specialist or the hospital department.

Without a prescription, the journey is still possible: it is then charged as a standard taxi fare, at the regulated rate.

Will I have to pay upfront?

No, when the conditions for coverage are met. We bill the covered share directly to your health insurance fund.

Bring your prescription and your up-to-date Carte Vitale. Only your Assurance Maladie fund can decide on your entitlement.

Can the driver wait for me during my appointment?

For a short appointment (blood test, X-ray, consultation), we are happy to wait on site and take you straight home.

For a long session (dialysis, chemotherapy, day surgery), we agree on a pick-up time and come back for you. Either way, book your return journey in a single booking.

Can a relative come with me?

Yes, subject to available seats. It is common and welcome, especially for elderly or disoriented patients and minors. Let us know when you book so that we can plan a suitable vehicle.

Do you travel further than 150 km?

Yes. We regularly provide long-distance medical transport to Angers, Rennes, Paris and Bordeaux.

For journeys over 150 km one way, your prescribing doctor must send a request for prior approval to your health insurance fund. Plan ahead as soon as you know your appointment date.

A medical appointment coming up?
Book now.

One call is enough to arrange your journey, one way or return. For a hospital discharge or an urgent need, the phone is still the fastest option.
